What is Project Apex and What Does the Community Need to Know?
To the community of Silver Lake – we recognize when Project Apex was rolled out, we missed some critical steps to ensure you had the appropriate information to make informed decisions on contributing your dollars to this incredible opportunity that lies ahead for our community now, and for generations to come.
So, let’s start at the beginning!
In the 2023 bond that the tax payers of Silver Lake USD 372 passed, we allocated $1.5-1.7 million for an upgrade weight room. Rest assured, those dollars are still available and allocated to this project! What has changed since that point, is in the original plan, we were looking to expand on the current weight room and build a bump out that would intrude into the parking lot. As we begin the steps to work on this project, it became clear, this was not going to be a viable option, as it would have too big of an impact on traffic flow in the high school parking lot.
We began conversations with staff, community members, The Silver Lake Community Foundation and our bond partner companies – and this bigger idea for Project Apex was born. What Project Apex is not – only a high school weight room. What Project Apex is – a multi-use wellness center, that will impact students and the community alike, but realistically it is the ultimate dream of what we, as a community, could accomplish.
Let’s talk dollars.
The cost to build the ultimate dream - $5.5 million. With the $1.5 million the district has allocated, The Silver Lake Community Foundation is looking to raise an additional $4 million. But, what happens if we don’t get the community support?
We have three options:
Option A: We raise all the funds needed and are able to build Project Apex and it is up and running for the 2026-27 school year.
Option B: We raise an additional $1-1.5 million, we are able to break ground on a new scaled down facility, which would replace the current concession stand/maintenance building.
Option C: We can’t hit that additional $1-1.5 million by the end of the summer, then we move forward with a new weight room facility that would revamp the current maintenance building attached to the concession stand.
What is the difference between a weight room and a multi-use wellness center?
As a society we know the impact good health habits can have on your lifestyle, life expectancy and overall life experience. Currently, we do not have enough capacity for all the students who would like to enroll in health or conditioning classes to do so and have a waitlist. Ultimate goal with any of the options listed above is to ensure every student who would like to take a wellness class, has the opportunity to do so. The dream space would allow us to accommodate double the number of students.
If we are able to make Project Apex a reality, we will be able to impact so many more students in a variety of ways, and the community as a whole. The new facility would have additional space and weight-lifting equipment, but also space for agility workouts, more students and team having access at one time, and the opportunity for community use and events.
The space would allow us to host events like alumni meals, pre-game tailgates, and even potentially community workout classes. More athletic teams would be able to practice/workout at the same time and provide indoor/outdoor space.
Future Impact
We look at this as a “generational project” – what does that mean? Like many small towns across America, the school system is the heartbeat that keeps people connected and growing. Think back to when the community came together to build the football grandstands – that is a generational project. Years ago, when the community came together to build the former baseball field – that is a generational project. This new wellness facility has the opportunity to be a that next project that will have a huge impact on generations to come.
What else?
Questions have been asked about bond savings, grade school playground and bond projects with direct impact on the classroom. Yes, yes and yes all of these things have happened and are happening. We are excited to share so many updates on the bond in this year’s district calendar, which will start hitting mailboxes in July.
Next steps
We have a limited time for the Silver Lake Community Foundation to raise funds for Project Apex. The direct dollars raised will ultimately decide if we move forward with option A, B or C, but at the end of the day, as promised in the bond our students will have a new space for a weight room.
If you would like to be a part of this you can make donations to the Silver Lake Community Foundation via their website - https://silverlakecommunityfoundation.org/
If you still have questions, post them in the comments here or reach out to a school board member, and will do our best to answer your questions!
