What's Going On In JH Science?

Welcome to the Silver Lake Junior High Science News Page!

Here are some updates and important reminders of upcoming events.

It has been a great start to the school year!  We are now settling into a regular schedule and finding our routines.  Each student has received their WorkTexts and LogIn information to the Pearson Interactive Science curriculum.  Hopefully soon I will have a tutorial posted on this site as a reminder on how to locate the eText.  The eText is an online version of their WorkText. It is very handy in case a student forgets their WorkText at school.

Science 7th and 8th

We have successfully completed our first STEM Challenge of the year!  The students were challenged to build “First Responder Rob” a lookout tower that will allow him to warn his town of the rising flood waters.  The building materials for the tower included tape, 12 straws, and 2 notecards. The students worked in teams of 3-4 to design and construct their towers.  Once construction was complete, we then tested the structural integrity of each tower by carefully adding weight. It was a tough competition and the title of STEM Challenge Champions goes to the 7th graders.  The Champions received a full size candy bar and a spot on our STEM Challenge Champions Wall of Fame.

The STEM Tower Champions are Ryan, Kaden, Parker, & Dysen.  Their tower was able to hold 1490 g or 3.28 lbs! Their design and construction was impressive.  The structure did not even begin to shift until the 1000 g weight was added! Great job guys!

Next up for us in JH Science is to dive into Scientific Inquiry and how we study/learn about this wonderful world we live in.
